SAP is a standard framework system. This means that SAP makes available a range of standard processes, which can be varied and controlled through configuration (customizing). 

The adaptation of the processes through customizing means applying a standard utilization of the system. Utilization of a standard SAP setup is synonymous with ensuring

that it is possible to upgrade to future releases or enhancement packages at limited cost

that “no doors have been locked” or obstacles placed in the way of starting to use new modules or functions

that there is access to cheaper and more efficient support, because it is simpler to support the system

that in future, it is possible to work with other suppliers, because the setup is transparent and can therefore be maintained and developed by consultants other than those who originally set up the system. 

The alternative to customizing is special development through own programming and – something that can cause even greater damage – modification of the SAP standard software.

No project can be completed without any programming at all. For example, there may be interfaces or similar to other systems, and they must be programmed. However, there should be a clear, separate goal of limiting own development as far as possible.

We consider one of our primary tasks to be to encourage the company to set itself this goal. At the same time, we help to identify solutions within the standard setup on the basis of our in-depth knowledge of the wide range of options that actually exists by thinking creatively and – in particular – by challenging the company with regard to the issue of whether its special requirements are actually critical, or whether they have more to do with “that’s the way we’ve always done it”.
